SoftBank 2007 Spring - X01NK by Nokia

this phone from Nokia was originally announced way back in May of 2006. so when it actually comes out in March, it will be a mighty 10 months since first being announced to going on sale. a slightly tweaked version of the Nokia E61, it supports wireless LAN, bluetooth, email client, microsoft document viewer, (Nokia) full browser.

the screen is 2.8 inches below which you will find a Qwerty keypad. for external memory it takes miniSD. one big difference between this X01NK and the E61 is that this version is locked to SoftBank. you may have noticed Vodafone in the screen below - lets hope they can get that changed by the official release.

Hi Matt, first of all sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Unfortunately I also don't have much of an answer.

As it says in the article and as I understood at the time, SoftBank say that it is locked to their network. Ask in a SoftBank store and of course they will tell you that it is unlockable. However of the 3 main networks and of all the makes of mobile phones on sale in Japan, I have got to say that if any, this phone surely must be unlockable.

Thing is I am still here in Japan and haven't yet had the need to consider that if I ever do go home I am going to want to get a nice Japanese handset to take home with me. So for now, I know little about unlocking Japanese handsets. (It is a shame cause quite a lot of the incoming searches are about unlocking.)

I noticed that one of the American girls that post Japanese vblogs on youtube is using the very nice P from DoCoMo (which I would have thought the hardest network to unlock from) so I am sure you can find info on unlocking a SoftBank Nokia phone.

Again, sorry I can't be of help and good luck in finding info on the subject.

After contacting softbank about purchasing this phone..I was told my company is not big enough and we would need to purchase at least 50units...Yeah right..Just the attitude of these guys really annoys me..

Anyway after some digging found one can buy the E-61i from OS or the net and use ur existing softbank SIM..all works fine except the softbank mail...softbank.ne.jp.

There are some guys that are working on a hack but not sure when this will be completed or if successful..

Well hope this helps other readers.

hey matt;

you're one of the few folks i found posting about the e61i. can you confirm that it definitely works with a softbank sim? sorry for the geek-out questions but i've read up alot on it and it seems like a big deal i'm willing to chip some money in on. i recently snagged my first keitai here in tokyo, 812sh, but it would great to have a mobile that can work on 3g network, have wifi, and work in the states.
please drop me a line when you have time;
